Monitoring and Troubleshooting SMS

4:03 PM

These questions are derived from the Self Test Software Practice Test for Microsoft exam # 70-089 - Planning, Deploying, and Managing Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003

Objective: Monitoring and Troubleshooting SMS

SubObjective: Troubleshoot roaming clients in an SMS hierarchy

Single Answer, Multiple Choice

You are the SMS administrator of your company. The SMS 2003 hierarchy consists of a central site and two primary child sites. All client computers are configured as SMS Advanced Clients.

You create an advertisement that will install new antivirus software on client computers. You distribute the package to all distribution points in the three sites. You want to preserve bandwidth usage by preventing roaming clients from downloading the package from a remote distribution point.

What should you do to achieve the desired goal?

  • Create a protected distribution point.
  • Select the Download program from distribution point option on the Advanced Client tab of the Advertisement Properties dialog box.
  • Create a separate advertisement for each site.
  • Select the Do not run program option on the Advanced Client tab of the Advertisement Properties dialog box.

Answer:
D. Select the Do not run program option on the Advanced Client tab of the Advertisement Properties dialog box.

Tutorial:
You should select the Do not run program option on the Advanced Client tab of the Advertisement Properties dialog box. Advertisements are the objects that make programs available to clients. You must advertise a program before clients can run it. You can configure roaming boundaries to specify whether a roaming boundary is a local roaming boundary or a remote roaming boundary. This determines whether the Advanced Client treats distribution points in the site as being locally available for each roaming boundary that is configured. In a remote roaming boundary, advertisements sent to Advanced Clients specify whether the client downloads the software program from a remote distribution point before running it, runs the package from a remote distribution point, or does nothing and waits until a distribution point becomes available locally. Therefore, to preserve bandwidth usage by preventing roaming clients from downloading the package from a remote distribution point, you should also select the Do not run program option under the When no distribution point is available locally heading on the Advanced Client tab of the Advertisement Properties dialog box.

You should not create a protected distribution point. A protected distribution point prevents Advanced Clients located outside of its configured boundaries from either downloading or running advertised packages from it. A client sends a package source file request to its resident management point to either download or run a package program. If the client is located within the boundaries that are configured for a protected distribution point, the management point provides the client with a list of distribution point locations that contain the requested package source file. If the client is located outside the boundaries configured for a protected distribution point, then the protected distribution point is not provided to the client as a source file location by the management point. This will cause the clients to download the package from a remote distribution points. Therefore, creating a protected distribution points will not prevent the roaming clients from downloading the package from a remote distribution point.

You should not select the Download program from distribution point option on the Advanced Client tab of the Advertisement Properties dialog box. The Download program from distribution point option under the When a distribution point is available locally heading on the Advanced Client tab is used to ensure that the advertised program is downloaded on the client computer before it is run. Selecting the Download program from distribution point option will not prevent the roaming clients from downloading the package from a remote distribution point.

You should not create a separate advertisement for each site. Advertisements are the objects that make programs available to clients. When you want to distribute a single program to all clients in different sites, you can create a single advertisement and distribute the package to all distribution points in all the sites to enable users to download and install the program from their local distribution point. When a client runs the advertisement, it receives the list of available distribution points from the management point. The management point also determines whether the distribution points are in the local roaming boundaries or remote roaming boundaries of the site associated with the roaming boundary the client is in. This location helps determine how the Advanced Client accesses the distribution points in that site. Therefore, configuring a separate advertisement for each site is not necessary, nor will it prevent roaming clients from downloading the package from a remote distribution point.
